International Day of Care and Support - 29. October 2024
The care and support of individuals ...
The care and support of individuals who need extra help to manage their lives and be independent is not just a moral obligation but a fundamental right that every person deserves. Whether it's providing assistance to older people, individuals with disabilities or long-term illnesses, those facing mental health challenges, or our dedicated carers, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that they receive the care, support, and empowerment they need to lead fulfilling lives.
Older people, who have contributed so much to our society, deserve to enjoy their later years with dignity and respect. They should have access to the necessary support to help them maintain their independence, social connections, and joy in life. To enable this, we must invest in programs and services that cater to their unique needs, from healthcare to social activities.
Individuals with disabilities or long-term illnesses deserve to live life on their terms. They possess the same rights and aspirations as anyone else, and we must ensure that they have the support and resources they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives. We should strive to create an inclusive society that provides accessible environments, promotes adaptive technologies, and offers personalized care to meet their unique requirements.
People grappling with mental health challenges need to know that they are not alone and that support is available. We must fight the stigma and discrimination they face, and ensure they have access to comprehensive mental health services, tailored treatments, and community support networks to help them lead full and empowered lives.
Don't forget the carers ...
Carers are another group that requires support and care to manage their role effectively. Carers often sacrifice their own well-being to care for their loved ones, and as a result, they may experience physical and emotional strain. It is essential to provide them with the necessary support, respite care, and access to resources to help them fulfill their caregiving responsibilities while also maintaining their own well-being. We owe it to them to ensure they are not overlooked or overburdened. We must provide them with the resources and respite care they need, recognize and respect their invaluable contributions, and work to promote their physical and emotional well-being.
Our society ...
As a society, it is imperative that we advocate for policies and systems that prioritize the care and support of those who need it most. This includes robust funding for social care services, integrated healthcare systems, comprehensive support networks, and the recognition of the rights and autonomy of all individuals.
We must champion a culture that fosters empathy, understanding, and inclusivity, and proactively work towards dismantling barriers that limit the opportunities and experiences of those requiring care and support. Each and every person, regardless of age, ability, or health condition, deserves the chance to live with dignity, independence, and empowerment. Let us stand together in support of this cause and ensure that every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to society.
Caregiving is a critical part of a strong society. Caregivers provide support to those who are elderly, young or in need of direct aid, and they also contribute to the fabric of our overall community. Resilient communities are those in which people can rely on each other, trust each other, ask for help and pull each other through hard times. And these times are certainly tough. They remind us how much we all need each other—and how much caring—not just caregiving—is critical to our individual and collective wellbeing.
Caregivers are the unseen heroes of the healthcare system. They are the glue and the heart of healthcare and care for people who need help.
