Ein paar Gedanken zum Internationalen Tag der Menschen mit Behinderungen (3. Dezember)

Image

Embracing Earth Hour: A Beacon of Sustainability, Respect, and Diversity - Saturday, March 22, 2025

Image
Earth Hour, a global initiative by the World Wildlife Fund, is not just about flicking off a switch; it's a profound statement of commitment to our planet and its diverse ecosystems. This annual event, held on the last Saturday of March from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. (20:30 to 21:30), encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, fostering a moment of global solidarity for sustainability. Mentally, Earth Hour offers a pause from the constant stimulation of modern life. It invites us to reflect on our role within the complex web of life and the impact of our daily choices. This hour can be a meditative space, encouraging mindfulness and introspection about our personal responsibility towards the environment. Physically, Earth Hour symbolizes our collective power to reduce our ecological footprint. The simple act of switching off lights translates into a tangible reduction in energy consumption, highlighting the potential for more significant ...

Christopher Street Day - June 28th

Image
Celebrating diverse identities and promoting equality, an annual event advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and fostering a sense of community. Christopher Street Day (CSD) has been celebrated for many years throughout Europe as an answer to Pride Month or Gay Pride Parades. This is particularly the case for CSD in Germany and Switzerland. Now, almost every large city in Germany celebrates Christopher Street Day in addition to a number of other pride events!  Unfolding the Pages of History The birth of Christopher Street Day (CSD) takes us back to the tipping point of 1969 in New York City, the dawn of the audacious Stonewall Uprising. It was here that under the restless sky of June 28, a courageous collective of homosexuals and other sexually marginalized groups revolted against the unspoken brutality deployed by police against gay bars. The unforgettable battleground was the Stonewall Inn, a clandestine gay bar nested in Christopher Street within the artistic borough of Greenwich Village...

International Day of Pink Apr 10th, 2024

Image
The International Day of Pink is an important event that aims to raise awareness about bullying, discrimination, and prejudice, particularly against the LGBTQ+ community. By wearing pink shirts and organizing various activities, individuals and communities can show their support for diversity and inclusivity. The history of the International Day of Pink began in Nova Scotia, Canada, when two straight high school students witnessed a gay student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In response, these two students not only intervened but also decided to wear pink shirts themselves as a symbol of support. Their initiative quickly spread throughout the school, creating a united front against bullying and promoting acceptance. Since its inception, the International Day of Pink has gained momentum and become a global movement. It serves as a platform for individuals, schools, workplaces, and communities to come together and actively combat all forms of bullying, homophobia, transphobia, a...

Zero Discrimination Day 2024 - March 1st

Image
Today ... 1st of March ... is Zero Discrimination Day On each 1st of March, we observe Zero Discrimination Day. It's a day where we appreciate everyone's right to live a good, self-controlled, self-paced, self-directed, and self-determined life with respect and with dignity. This day shines a light on the importance of learning about and encouraging acceptance, kindness, peace, and most importantly, change. Zero Discrimination Day is part of a worldwide effort to stop any kind of unfair treatment. This year marks the tenth time we're observing Zero Discrimination Day. The theme this year is “To protect everyone’s health, protect everyone’s rights” -  If you want more information - visit UNAIDS  or the United Nations Saying no to all inequalities - whether because of gender, income, race, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity and religion. Such inequalities undermine justice and dignity.  Zero Discrimination Day calls to end discrimination, stigmatisation and...

May 12th is International Nurses Day

Image
International Nurses Day is an international day observed around the world on 12 May (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth) each year, to mark the contributions that nurses make to society.  Florence Nightingale (May 12th 1820 – August 13th 1910) was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale gave nursing a favorable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night. The role of nurses and caregivers is so much more than the help and care at first glance - and what most people are talking about - Providing a listening ear to your loved one, and showing care and emphatic support is what I like to stress and make people aware of. Caregiving has always been important to families, friends and communities, but over the recent 3 years, caregiving has escalated even more in its value and significance. The necessity for caregiv...

We must treat each other with dignity and respect

Image
There are many forces that divide us in the world: politics, religion, beliefs to name just a few. What unites us is the desire to live with dignity. But not all political systems and religious beliefs give or allow everyone the identical, same or similar opportunities - so many people on our planet fight to ensure that they and their loved ones can have a dignified life and, ultimately, self-determined living until a dignified end. Dignity is one of the most important things to the human spirit. At least that is my firm believe, even if some religious and political views see it differently. Everyone has the right to lead a dignified life and to realize and try to unfold their potential and to find their personal joy of life and happiness. Young, old, rich, poor - anywhere in the world we all have the right to be treated with dignity. We treat others with dignity whenever we help other, stand up for a friend or recognize the qualities and talents that make each of us special. When thin...

Trust and Self-Trust - Respect and Self-Respect - Life and Relationship

Image
Trust is the basement, the pillars and the roof for oneself and for relations. Trust builds relationship and holds relationship together. Trust goes hand in hand with the integrity of the partners and is what makes a meaningful and confident relationship. Self-trust is trusting blindly, trusting implicitly oneself - stopping to questioning oneself - starts with understanding and goes on with believing in oneself. Trust in a relationship is similar from my viewpoint - Trust is like putting a part of yourself in someone else's hands. Therefore, it is difficult for some people to gain trust in friendship or relationship.  I am sure I don't have to go into any detail or example - as sometimes we experience disappointments or betrayals - when this happens, we lose faith. I firmly believe that we have to trust in us and others, otherwise a good life and relationship becomes impossible or so hard that life becomes only existence. It leads me to conclude that sincere, trusting b...

Quality of Life and Dignity

Image
My guiding principles: You can only choose to a limited extent when you die and also only to a limited extent how you die. But YOU can decide HOW you live. And that will tell you how you don't want to live. Life and love can be so wonderful. Joy and pain can be that close And something new can always happen and you think you're in heaven. But if life has no more good moments, no surprises no quality for one and hope is only hope for hopes, you should be able to define how you can spend and enjoy the last few days and go with as little pain and suffering as possible. Quality of life and dignity The quality of life and the dignity of an individual person is a complex, unique, but as well changeable and adaptable in the course of a lifetime and in cases of changes and illness. Dignity and quality of life, there are a number of definitions and considerations in various areas of society, in faiths, religions, in laws and also in philosophy, but no general definition. Quality of life...
