Before We Judge Medical Aid in Dying, We Should Listen – A Documentary About Life, and Why It Changes the Debate

Image
A Documentary That Isn't About Dying — It's About Living Sidenote: Below you'll find a German version. Kurze Bemerkung: Weiter unten auch die Deutschen Text Since my wife's assisted death, I have written about medical aid in dying, personal autonomy, and living with a terminal illness. My wife was an equine therapist. For many years, she worked with people, helping them connect with horses. She was also a Centered Riding Instructor, supporting children with disabilities and helping stroke survivors regain confidence and independence. Horses were never just her profession—they were her passion. After eleven years of devastating illness, she eventually lost control of every part of her body. Only the three middle fingers of her left hand could still move slightly on some mornings. Otherwise, she depended entirely on others for every aspect of daily life. Over those eleven years, she gradually lost every ability that makes an independent, self-determined life possible. Her...

Freiheit, Schutz, Würde: Drei Perspektiven auf die Sterbehilfe-Debatte – Erfahrungen, Realität und Spannungsfelder – Artikel 1 von 2

Image

Medical Aid in Dying in the United States – Overview of State Regulations

Image
Conversations about Medical Aid in Dying are never abstract. They touch deeply personal experiences of illness, loss, fear, and the fundamental human desire for dignity at the end of life. For many patients facing terminal illness, the question is not about choosing death, but about how much suffering must be endured when medicine can no longer offer healing. This article does not seek to promote or normalize assisted dying, but rather to provide a clear, factual overview of how Medical Aid in Dying is regulated in parts of the United States—within strict legal boundaries and under carefully defined conditions. Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) allows terminally ill, mentally competent, and decision-capable adults to self-administer a prescription medication—either by ingesting it orally or by self-administered infusion—in order to end their life with dignity and without further suffering. All existing MAID laws in the United States are based on the model of the Oregon Death with Dignity Act...

Würdevolles Selbstbestimmtes Sterben im Staat New York: Hintergründe und Aspekte

Image

Image
Ayla Eilert, a 24-year-old dancer from New York, died after suffering from an aggressive form of cancer that began with a sore on her tongue. Despite initially misdiagnosed, a biopsy revealed she had squamous cell carcinoma. Though not typically life-threatening, the cancer's location on her tongue made it more serious. Ayla underwent an 11-hour operation to remove a portion of her tongue and had subsequent chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. However, her health rapidly deteriorated, with cancer spreading to 13 areas of her body. In immense pain and weighing just 87 pounds. Ayla wished to end her life through Medical Aid in Dying (MAID), which is currently illegal in New York. Now, her parents are campaigning for its legalization. However, by the middle of January 2022, her health worsened rapidly and her pain beca...

Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne are reaffirming their pact of helping each other in case of dying in dignity.

Image
Sharon Osbourne and her husband Ozzy Osbourne talked once again about their plan to pass away by Medical aid in dying (MAID), if their physical and mental health takes a severe decline. MAID is an option to pass away in dignity - an option which offers the alternative get help from a physician, providing a competent adult with a terminal illness with a prescription for a lethal dose of a drug at the request of the patient, which the patient intends to use to end his or her life., if their physical and mental health takes a severe decline. Sharon’s strong view on having an assisted death is largely influenced by watching her father suffering for so long from Alzheimer’s disease before his death in 2007. Then, in 2014, Ozzy Osbourne spoke of his desire to die by medically assisted suicide in the case of any “life-threatening condition.” “ If I can’t live my life the way I’m living it now – and I don’t mean financially – then that’s it...[Switzerland], ” Ozzy mentioned. “ If I ca...

Das Kanadische MAID Program - Regeln zur medizinischen Sterbehilfe in Kanada (Stand 07.2023)

Image

We must treat each other with dignity and respect

Image
There are many forces that divide us in the world: politics, religion, beliefs to name just a few. What unites us is the desire to live with dignity. But not all political systems and religious beliefs give or allow everyone the identical, same or similar opportunities - so many people on our planet fight to ensure that they and their loved ones can have a dignified life and, ultimately, self-determined living until a dignified end. Dignity is one of the most important things to the human spirit. At least that is my firm believe, even if some religious and political views see it differently. Everyone has the right to lead a dignified life and to realize and try to unfold their potential and to find their personal joy of life and happiness. Young, old, rich, poor - anywhere in the world we all have the right to be treated with dignity. We treat others with dignity whenever we help other, stand up for a friend or recognize the qualities and talents that make each of us special. When thin...

Communication skills - for Care Givers, Aiders and Grief Counselor and other Helpers

While reading my blog - you might noticed that my actual job / profession is working as designer as user experience designer.  User Experience refers to more or less every thing which a person (we call them most often users) can experience when using a product, application, system, or service - and using is nothing else than communicating. It is a broad term that can cover anything from how well the user can navigate the product, how easy it is to use, how relevant the content displayed is etc - and that's what communicating is all about - easy to understand and relevant .. Having good communication skills and or working on them is a benefit in design and living - and even more important while while helping people in the medical field, challenging times,, end of life, or even while dying or while grieving. This often comes to my mind remembering when I think of two of my many professions I learned and practiced - designer (architect and web-design) and paramedic (Red Cross and Arm...
