March 8, International Women’s Day, reminds us every year how important equality, respect, and recognition for women around the world truly are.  Strength has no gender! Whether in technical fields, skilled trades, science, or leadership roles, women have often had to fight hard to claim their place. Today we see more and more women in a wide range of roles: as engineers, firefighters, scientists, craftspeople, or leaders. They take responsibility, make decisions, and actively help shape our society. Anyone can become anything. And yet, we are not there yet. When I see political movements and old patterns of thinking starting to move backward again, it makes me both sad and angry. Every person already carries enough personal challenges through life. No one needs additional limits imposed from the outside. March 6, 2024 is Equal Pay Day in Germany - not because the gender pay gap has improved, but because 2024 is a leap year.  In the USA, the next Equal Pay Day is Tuesday, March 12, 2024. It’s high time for equal pay!  A man still earns more than a woman, even if they do the same job. Men have greater chances to hold political office or lead a company... Women do two thirds of the world's work, yet they only have access to ten percent of the world's income and one percent of the property... So, are we equal? Men have to demand that their wives, daughters, mothers and sisters earn more — commensurate with their work, actions qualifications and not their gender. On February 29, the 'Equal Care Day' initiative draws attention to the lack of appreciation of care work. It is a reminder of the low status that care work as a whole, the education and upbringing of children, caring for the sick, the elderly and people with disabilities has in our society. So wurden in Deutschland im Jahr 2022 über 171.000 Fälle von häuslicher Gewalt gegen Frauen polizeilich erfasst. In 126 Fällen handelte es sich dabei um Mord oder Totschlag. Breast cancer awareness is a key component of early detection efforts. It is essential that women know the most common symptoms associated with breast cancer, such as lumps and thickenings, and understand that prompt evaluation and early detection improves outcome. While breast cancer is typically associated with women, it's important to remind men that they too can be affected by this disease. And I speak from personal experience. It's a fact that one out of every 100 breast cancer cases is diagnosed in a man. It's crucial to understand your family's history of breast cancer because inherited gene mutations that increase the risk can be passed down from both parents. Societies that does not respect human rights - diversity, women's rights, equity, inclusion, and equality - obstructs and disables themself.  Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December — the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).  And especially today I think of the bravery and courage of women in situations such as those in Afghanistan and Iran, asserting and calling for their human rights in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity, continues to inspire us. In these countries and others, women in all their diversity continue to prove that the quest for the recognition of human rights is universal, untiring and unstoppable.
