World Suicide Prevention Day – Why Staying Silent Is Not an Option

Image
This should be a Call for Compassion, Openness, and Change Every year on September 10 , we observe World Suicide Prevention Day – a global awareness day that reminds us of one vital truth: we must stop treating suicide like something we can’t talk about . It’s a day for survivors, for families, for friends — and for all of us. A day that calls us to break the silence, confront the stigma, and create real, lasting change. A day to say out loud: Mental health crises, tragedies related to mental health can be / might be averted — through listening, through empathy, through action - an open ear, open mind, and open heart.   The Reality – Quiet, but Devastating According to the World Health Organization (WHO) , over 1 billion people worldwide live with mental health conditions . Anxiety and depression are among the most common. Still, most people suffer in silence . Every 40 seconds , someone dies by suicide. That’s around 800,000 people a year — more than war, natural disaste...

Talking about Death - Talking to Children about Suicide

Image
Whether we like it or not one of the only sure inevitable things in life is that we are all going die and our beloved ones. We don’t talk about death. We talk about sex, drugs and money. We teach our children about these subjects but we don’t talk about death and dying. We need to talk to our young about death and dying and we need to talk among ourselves openly about grieving. Pets are a good start whether they because they passed away peacefully caused by age - but as well when assisted by a doctor. We need to discuss how we feel about their death and encourage our children to do the same.  And adults don't like to talk to children about dying and death if it gets to suicide. Many believe that keeping suicide quiet protects children. But this is not the case.  By the way - I did so and thought so as well a long time, but especially by my latest explorations of studies and courses and seminars I joined - I were disabused. This is not the case - because children are ...

Suicide prevention- Don't Give Up

Image
In this article I will focus and deal with suicides triggered by depression or other psychiatric propensities. And I like to start off with a quote by  Barack Obama: “ To anyone out there who’s hurting — it’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help. It’s a sign of strength. ” Many people get depressed at one point or another throughout life. Whether it’s caused by death of a family member, environmental stress, or mental illness, feelings of depression can become difficult for many people. Unfortunately some people get so depressed as a result of their mental illness or life circumstances, that they consider suicide as an option to escape from their emotional pain. I had a number of challenging moments, experience and time of life I was and I am  able to live well without them 😊 on the other hand - after all these high and low tides in my life I learned or became to the conclusion that  the only cure for a bad day is to make a cup of coffee or tea, having a good piece of...

Suicide vs Dying with Dignity

Image
Suicides, considering suicides or dying with dignity and medical assisted in dying cover everyone from young to old, rich to poor. It cuts across religions, cultures, genders, income levels, and geography. The bandwidth of people, situations, reasons, side-effects and and and ...  There are no real shared similar and for sure not unique patterns from when the suicide is thought of to the point it is attempted. For some people, suicide is an impulsive response to life challenges, such as losing a loved one, a job, a setback, or another substantial challenge. In a number of cases, suicide ideation and thoughts grow over time, especially for someone with a mental health disorder like anxiety or depression and as well people with a life of suffering and walked through hell (pain and / or mental suffering). The burden of these conditions and challenges of life may lead them into thinking of suicide or dying in dignity. Whatever the process that leads to end one's life is, the effec...

Death as part of life - Needs, Wishes - Mental crises & Illnesses - Death with Dignity

Image
Nobody wonders when and why someone thinks her/his life is good, joyful or worth living. But if someone mentions that she or he would rather be dead - most often there is no understanding or interest at all - all too often even the immediate family, relatives or friends do not want to know the why. They do not want to understand that it is an individual and unique perspective. There are people who have already killed themselves - who, in the opinion of most other people, had not the slightest reason to do so. While on the other hand many seriously ill and severely disabled people fight tenaciously and persistently for their lives or for a better quality of life.  Whether a life is worth living obviously depends not only on external, objective factors.  I firmly believe that the understanding whether life is worth living depends much more or completely on the inner attitude and understand one's own live and dignity. And yes there can be psychosocial factors, depression and illn...

Talking about Dying with Dignity

Image
Assistance in Dying with Dignity There are different forms of assistance in dying. Passive euthanasia - Allowing to die by forgoing life-prolonging medical treatment or high-dose, life-shortening pain treatment, such as morphine (indirect euthanasia), are forms of euthanasia that a patient can make binding in a good living will.  Active euthanasia - Killing on demand, in which a doctor injects a lethal substance into the patient at his request is prohibited in Germany and in Switzerland.  Assisted suicide or suicide assistance (by physicians or others) with a self-determined end of life - is expressly permitted – and even declared a fundamental right by the Federal Constitutional Court. In contrast with the different forms of “euthanasia”, the decision-making process remains with the person (as outlined below) who wishes to end their own life. The patient decides on the end of their life and intentionally brings about his/her own death. In Germany and a few other countries, th...

Wer darf Sterbehilfe beanspruchen?

Image
