Christopher Street Day - June 28th

Celebrating diverse identities and promoting equality, an annual event advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and fostering a sense of community.

Christopher Street Day (CSD) has been celebrated for many years throughout Europe as an answer to Pride Month or Gay Pride Parades. This is particularly the case for CSD in Germany and Switzerland. Now, almost every large city in Germany celebrates Christopher Street Day in addition to a number of other pride events!

Unfolding the Pages of History The birth of Christopher Street Day (CSD) takes us back to the tipping point of 1969 in New York City, the dawn of the audacious Stonewall Uprising. It was here that under the restless sky of June 28, a courageous collective of homosexuals and other sexually marginalized groups revolted against the unspoken brutality deployed by police against gay bars. The unforgettable battleground was the Stonewall Inn, a clandestine gay bar nested in Christopher Street within the artistic borough of Greenwich Village.

These pulsating riots, the silent whispers of rebellion echoed into the deafening roars of liberation, marked not just the genesis of the gay rights movement in the States, but triggered an international revolution in the LGBTQ+ movement. The first wave of Christopher Street Day events surfaced across Europe in the late 1970s, washing ashore in Zurich, Switzerland in 1978, before roaring down Berlin, Germany in 1979. From there, the CSD events flourished, their roots taking hold across the country with dozens of events blossoming for all to attend.

Breathing Life into Christopher Street Day The heartbeat of Christopher Street Day is a vibrant celebration of identity, a universal call to arms for LGBTQ+ rights, and an unflinching demand for society to progress. These pulsing events strive to foster an atmosphere of acceptance and joy, inviting everyone to become the most authentic versions of themselves. It's a call to arms, an invitation to stand proudly in the light of truth and lend a unified voice of support to each unique identity in the LGBTQ+ kaleidoscope as their visibility is amplified.

While the sparks of the Stonewall Uprising crackled into existence on June 28, European cities honoring Christopher Street Day often shift the date to align with a more favorable weekend, due to logistical constraints. As a result, the rainbow-coloured celebrations may actually ignite in July. But take heart, the actual dates may flicker and change each year. And in the spirited tradition of CSD, the event often overflows beyond a single day, with the festivities spilling across an entire week or even more!
