UN International Day of Happiness 2024 - March 20th
International Day of Happiness aims to globally acknowledge and cherish the value of happiness in lives. This day encourages individuals to spread positivity in any possible way and prompts nations to prioritize their citizens' happiness.
Happiness plays an essential role in life for several reasons:
- Physical Health: Happiness has been linked to better physical health. Happy people tend to take better care of themselves by exercising, eating healthy, and getting regular check-ups, which reduces the risk of disease. Happiness also boosts the immune system, improving resistance to common illnesses.
- Mental Health: Happiness aids mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. It contributes to resilience, helping individuals handle adversity more effectively.
- Longevity / lifespan: Studies have suggested that happier people may live longer. A positive outlook on life can contribute to increased lifespan.
- Productivity: Happiness can increase productivity and performance at work. Happy employees are more motivated, creative, and dedicated, leading to better outcomes.
- Relationships: Happy individuals tend to have stronger and more satisfying relationships. They emanate positive energy, attracting others towards them, and can contribute to building a happier community or society.
- Overall Well-being: Ultimately, happiness contributes to a fuller, more satisfying life. It enhances the quality of life and promotes a sense of fulfillment and contentment.
Thoughts and Actions
There are lots of issues in our world right now. We can’t always change what is happening, but we can choose how we respond.
The relationships we have with others matter the most when it comes to being happy and healthy throughout our lives. In a world where people seem to be more divided and alone, it's essential for us to find ways to understand each other better and build stronger connections. This is more important now than it has ever been before.
These following simple actions can greatly contribute to building a happier, stronger community by fostering a sense of belonging, mutual respect, and positive relationships.
- Greet Everyone: A simple smile or a 'hello" can brighten someone else's day and make them feel acknowledged and seen.
- Be a Good Listener: When someone talks to you, genuinely listen to them without any distractions, judgment or the urge to respond immediately. This will help them to feel valued and respected.
- Show Empathy: Offer comfort and understanding when someone is going through a difficult time. Even just a few kind words or a sympathetic ear can make a big difference.
- Offer Help: If you see someone struggling, offer your help. It could be something as simple as helping them carry heavy bags, or offering assistance with a task.
- Communicate: Share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly and respectfully. Encourage others to do the same.
- Practice Gratitude: Not only express gratitude for your own blessings, but also acknowledge the contribution others make to your life.
- Promote Inclusion: Invite others to participate in group activities, discussions, or events. Make sure everyone feels welcome and included.
- Celebrate Others: Acknowledge the achievements of others, whether they're personal milestones or professional accomplishments.
- Respect Differences: Understand and respect diverging opinions, cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives. This encourages a diverse, open-minded community.
- Spread Kindness: Practice random acts of kindness. This could be as simple as paying for the person behind you in line at the coffee shop or writing a positive note for a coworker.
- Volunteer: Give your time to a local charity or community group. This will allow you to contribute to bringing about change and will also provide you an opportunity to interact with others.
- Share Positive Stories: Share inspiring, uplifting stories within your network, or share your successes and happy moments. This helps to cultivate a positive atmosphere.
Closing thought
