June is Pride Month and Pride Day Germany on July 6th, 2024
Pride Month happens every June and it's a special time for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or other non-straight or non-cisgender identities - a group we often call LGBTQ+. The month is named for the word "pride" because it's a time to be proud of who you are and who you love. This month is extra important because it's also about remembering a big event for LGBTQ+ rights: the Stonewall Riots in June 1969 - 55 years ago.
Embracing Pride Month: A Passionate Celebration of Diversity
Pride Month is more than just a month on the calendar; it's a vibrant message. It's a thunderous “I am here, and I matter” from the LGBTQ+ community, celebrated every June. Think about a world where all love is seen as equal, where people can safely be their truest selves. That’s what Pride Month is all about – being you and loving who you do, without any exceptions. From the Stonewall Riots onwards, it's a colourful protest of prejudice and a powerful affirmation of unity.
Now, let's swap our rainbow flag for a world map, and we'll journey together through how LGBTQ+ rights have changed around the world in recent years.
Big strides towards equality have been made, like a superhero saving the day. In 2020, the USA’s big Supreme Court, like the referees of justice, blew the whistle on job discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, saying the law has their backs. This was indeed a victory that brought Americans one step closer to creating a fair and inclusive society.
Another sterling year for LGBTQ+ rights was when Elliot Page, Canadian actor and producer (British Academy Film Awards, Golden Globe Award, Emmy Awards nominations and much more), told the whole world that he is transgender, turning the spotlight on trans rights and opening up conversations everywhere. Then there’s Pete Buttigieg, a man who loves another man and got one of the top roles in President Biden’s team. This sends a powerful message – who you love doesn’t hold back what you can do.
Yet, despite these strides forward, the finish line is still way ahead. Some countries continue to cling onto punishing laws, casting dark clouds over communities where being gay or trans can land you in jail, or even cost your life.
Pride Month is a call for change. It’s remembering our past, flying our rainbow flags high in the present, and looking forward to a future where everyone can truly be free to be themselves, regardless of who they love or how they identify. With every burst of colour during Pride Month, we are reminded of the progress made and the journey ahead. Because after all, love is love, isn't it? Pride in our unique individuality. We are all different in so many ways, and true liberation will come when we accept and love all those differences. The diversity and uniqueness of us all as individuals is magical, and we should celebrate it every day.
PRIDE DAY GERMANY! On July 6
By the way, in Germany on July 6, we will again celebrate queer diversity at workplace. Together with companies and their employees, we will show the world how colorful business can be. And how everyone benefits from this openness: People and companies, society and the economy.
