Political Dimensions of Mental Health - Equality, and Self-Determination - Social Peace and Peace at all

In the course of my work and blogging in the field of mental health, it has become abundantly clear that mental health, equality, and self-determination are closely linked to both small and large politics. This became even clearer to me as I researched and wrote articles for International Women's Day.

Legislation, regulations, and especially resource allocation are crucial. Political conditions, societal conditions, and decisions influence the availability and access to mental health services, support, and other resources. Laws and budgets determine how much money is allocated to the system and the healthcare system, and what priorities are set.

Equality: Political measures to promote equality, whether in terms of gender, race, sexual orientation, or other characteristics, have direct impacts on the well-being and quality of life of individuals. Laws against discrimination and for equal opportunities are crucial for the mental health of marginalized groups.

Self-Determination: Political frameworks influence the extent to which individuals can determine their own life circumstances. This includes issues such as freedom and human rights, which have direct effects on mental health.

Social Safety Nets: Political decisions about social safety nets, such as unemployment benefits, social assistance, and other support services, influence the financial stability and thereby the mental health of individuals.

Societal Norms: Politics can also influence societal norms and values, which in turn determine how mental health is perceived and treated in society.

Overall, it is therefore impossible to consider mental health, equality, and self-determination without taking into account small and large politics. Political decisions have far-reaching effects on the well-being and quality of life of individuals and communities.

Current situation in the USA as I see it

I want to write about the situation in the USA, triggered by events of the past few weeks within my closest network. A good colleague lost her job due to Trump and Musk. She is a single mother of two children; one child has a disability and requires special support and schooling. The school for her disabled child was closed. Through our professional and collegial network, we immediately collected money, but this cannot last forever.

My worries my thoughts ...

Donald Trump’s lack of interest in parliamentary democracy, his disregard for democratic principles, and his disinterest in fostering democratic opinion and will formation are clearly evident in his governing and leadership style.

President Trump’s governance largely relied on executive orders to direct federal government policies, often with significant impacts on human rights, domestic issues, and global relations. While executive orders are intended to influence federal operations, their scope can reach beyond government entities, affecting various sectors such as education, healthcare, and immigration. Human rights organizations, particularly Human Rights Watch, have been actively monitoring and responding to these developments, highlighting the detrimental effects on marginalized groups and global diplomacy. This analysis explores the implications of Trump's executive orders on social peace, human rights, women, education, and research, while emphasizing the negative consequences they brought.

Executive Orders and Their Impact on Human Rights:

Trump’s use of executive orders often sought to reverse policies from previous administrations, such as the Obama-era measures, and created significant divisions in the U.S. political landscape. Many of these orders were criticized for their harmful impact on human rights, particularly targeting immigrant communities, racial minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community. The administration's stance on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) was framed as "dangerous" and "immoral," while policies like the refugee admissions freeze and immigration raids disproportionately affected people of color. These measures led to widespread fear, particularly within immigrant communities, who avoided public spaces like hospitals or schools to escape deportation, exacerbating societal divisions and undermining social peace.

Erosion of Federal Agencies and Public Trust:

The actions taken by the "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, severely damaged federal agencies by slashing staff and resources. This significantly affected the operation of vital services, including public health data and information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The dismantling of these agencies weakened the government’s capacity to safeguard public health, support vulnerable populations, and ensure the protection of human rights. In particular, the curtailment of healthcare access and critical social services undermined trust in government institutions, harming the well-being of citizens and diminishing social cohesion.

Consequences for Global Human Rights and U.S. Foreign Policy:

Trump’s foreign policy decisions, including the suspension of foreign aid and termination of State Department grants, had severe ramifications for human rights around the world. The cessation of support for independent media outlets, such as those in Russia and Belarus, reduced the global capacity to hold authoritarian regimes accountable. Additionally, cuts to humanitarian aid left vulnerable populations without critical support, leading to unnecessary suffering and death. The administration's willingness to engage in militaristic policies, such as loosening restrictions on airstrikes and special operations outside recognized conflict zones, exacerbated civilian harm and diminished the global image of the U.S. as a defender of international law.

Challenges in Education and Research:

Within the U.S., Trump’s policies also targeted educational spaces, particularly regarding racial and sexual identity. Several state-level policies sought to censor or distort the history and experiences of marginalized groups, especially Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ communities. These efforts to rewrite school curricula posed a direct challenge to human rights norms, potentially limiting students' access to an inclusive, truthful education. Furthermore, the disruption of federal support for research, especially in areas of public health and social justice, threatened to stagnate academic progress and hinder efforts to address pressing social issues. These educational policies and research cutbacks disproportionately affected women, minorities, and marginalized groups, denying them the resources needed for empowerment and growth.

Negative Effects on Women and Social Peace:

The Trump administration's policies had profound negative effects on women, particularly through the defunding of reproductive justice and abortion access. Executive orders targeted both domestic and international abortion rights, curbing women’s ability to make decisions about their bodies. The political climate fostered by these executive orders contributed to greater societal divisions, with many marginalized groups feeling alienated and fearful of government reprisal. The resulting chaos and lack of social cohesion weakened the overall peace in society, creating an environment where basic human rights were under constant threat, and minority voices were silenced.

Final Summary:

President Trump's executive orders had a lasting negative impact on social peace, women, education, research, and human rights. His actions deepened divisions within the U.S. political landscape, harmed vulnerable populations both domestically and abroad, and weakened federal agencies crucial for public health and safety. The erosion of human rights protections, coupled with an aggressive foreign policy and harmful domestic measures, led to widespread fear, distrust, and a decline in global perceptions of the U.S. as a champion of human rights.
These actions ultimately marginalized women, people of color, and immigrant communities, while stifling education and research initiatives that are essential for social progress. The negative repercussions of these executive orders underscore the long-term damage done to social peace, equality, and international diplomacy.
