Celebrating Joy: Reflecting on Happiness this International Day of Happiness - March 20th

March 20th, the International Day of Happiness, offers us the opportunity to pause and reflect on happiness. It is a day to acknowledge that happiness is not only found in big, spectacular events - that you find it much more in the small, everyday moments.
It is a day to remind ourselves that we can greatly contribute to our own happiness and that of those around us.

Happiness is both simple and complex, an easy yet multifaceted term that encompasses momentary or enduring positive feelings, ranging from quiet joy to exuberant delight. A person can be considered happy if they consistently feel good because their life contains much of what they value. In the sense of good fortune, happiness signifies a lucky break or a positive turn of fate. For me, happiness has a lot to do with 'coherence,' whether things go smoothly or take an unexpected, yet good and positive, turn in life or our surroundings. A healthy social, societal, and professional environment, as well as contact with other people, are certainly among the most important factors for human happiness. I find happiness in personal matters and strongly in my environment, society, and the world. The freedom to shape one's life independently, the freedom within a group—be it family, a sports team, or at work—is undeniably part of what happiness means to me.

Human happiness, as I see it, stems less from rare, major strokes of luck or the 'huge course of life' than from small, happy circumstances and moments that occur every day. It is the little moments in daily life, often unnoticed, that bring us true happiness. A smile from a stranger, a sunbeam streaming through the window, or a conversation with a friend can lift our spirits and make us feel that life is beautiful.

Happiness is a complex and multifaceted feeling, as I see it and experience it, happiness can manifest in many ways. It can be a fleeting moment of joy or a deep sense of contentment that lasts for a long time. It can arise from a conscious decision or an unexpected twist of fate. Whatever happiness means to us, it is important that we cherish and nurture it. Ultimately, happiness is what gives our lives meaning and makes them worth living.

Today, March 20th, the World Happiness Day coincides with the astronomical start of spring. This is a fortunate coincidence that reminds us that new beginnings and hope are closely linked to happiness. Spring represents renewal and growth, and so we can see this day as an invitation to rediscover and nurture our own happiness. Let's use this opportunity to celebrate the small and big moments of happiness in our lives and bring joy to each other.

Quotes which I really like:

"It is difficult to find happiness within us, and it is quite impossible to find it anywhere else." - Nicolas Chamfort

"Happiness is a direction, not a place." - Sydney J. Harris

"Happiness often arises from paying attention to small things; unhappiness often arises from neglecting small things." - Wilhelm Busch
